Covid Update # 9 (February 11, 2021)

As a result of today’s Public Health Advisory, Synchronized Skating Teams in the St. John’s Metro area with participants in Grades 7-12, their Coaches, Managers and Volunteers who practiced, coached or assisted the team at any time from February 5-7,2021 must self-isolate away from household members for 14 days from the date of the last gathering or practice they attended, or from their last contact with a positive case, whichever is more recent.

Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the investigation in the metro area and the ongoing detection of new cases among students in Grades 7-12 and their contacts, Public Health is advising anyone who participated in the following events on the specified dates and times listed below to self-isolate for 14 days.

  • Students in Grades 7-12 and other individuals who attended parties or gatherings of 10 or more people with these students in the metro area on February 5-7.
  • Students in Grades 7-12 and other individuals who played team sports with students in the metro area on February 5-7, which includes individuals who live outside of the metro area who played on the same or opposing teams or played in a tournament; and,
  • Individuals who coached or assisted with team sports in Grades 7-12 who played games or practiced in the metro area on February 5-7.

If a self-isolating individual who attended one of these events develops any symptoms of COVID-19, they should arrange testing. As noted above, people can arrange testing by completing the online self-assessment and referral tool available here or by calling 811.

Household members of individuals affected by these advisories are not required to isolate unless they or their household member experience symptoms of COVID-19 and/or tests positive for COVID-19.

Full Public Advisory may be found at https://www.gov.nl.ca/releases/2021/health/0211n05/

We have received clarification that skaters who are NOT members of Synchronized Skating Teams as described above are not subject to today’s Public Health Advisory.

We will get through this together! Stay Safe, Take Care, Be Kind.

UPDATE #8 (February 10, 2021)

In compliance with the Newfoundland and Labrador Special Public Health Order of today, February 10, 2021, which includes the suspension of ALL group, team sports and recreation activities throughout the province all Skate Canada NL Clubs and Skating Schools must immediately cease operations until further notice. We have clarified that this order includes all programs which offer private lessons.   It is up to each and every one of us to do our very best to reduce the risk of transmission through full compliance with public health orders including limiting our number of contacts and movements. Safety must continue to be our top priority.  We will provide updates as information becomes available.  Stay Safe, Take Care, and Please Be Kind.

UPDATE #7 (February 8, 2021)

In compliance with the Newfoundland and Labrador Special Public Health Order of today, February 8, 2021 which included the suspension of all group, team sports and recreation activities operating in the Eastern Health Zone 1 area (Conception Bay South to Witless Bay North) all Skate Canada NL Clubs and Skating Schools operating in Zone 1must immediately cease operations until further notice.  We have a number of requests surrounding clarification around private lessons and have confirmed that ALL skating programs including those during which private lessons are offered are deemed to be group activities and must be suspended per this order.

Out of an abundance of caution we are also requesting that skaters and coaches not seek guest skating/coaching opportunities in areas outside of Zone 1 while this Special Public Health Order is in effect. It is up to each and every one of us to do our very best to reduce the risk of transmission by full compliance with public health orders including limiting our number of contacts and movements. Safety must continue to be our top priority.

We wish to thank you for your continual efforts in providing skating programs in your communities during these uncertain times. We are here to help you and your club in any way possible as this situation evolves.

UPDATE September 23, 2020

Dear skaters, coaches, officials, parents/guardians, clubs & skating schools,

In these uncertain times for our organization, our communities and our world, we want to remind our Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador family that we are all in this together.

We know our community is eager to get back on the ice and resume skating activities.

As we enter Alert Level 3 of NL Life with Covid-19, we would like to assure you that we have been working toward our return to skating when permitted under the direction of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chief Medical Officer. Arenas will be permitted to open with restrictions in Newfoundland and Labrador under Alert Level 2 (implementation date to be announced).

Over the past several weeks, Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador created a working committee to research, discuss and assemble a Return to Skating Guideline resource for our section.  The Return to Skating Committee is comprised of leaders in the areas of programming, coaching, events, communications, healthcare, education, and risk management. This committee conducted a series of virtual meetings to navigate our return to skating and will remain active to the monitor the ever changing environment surrounding COVID-19, Public Health Restrictions and its effects on our sport.

Please note that this document is subject to change based on recommendations made by the Return to Skating Committee in consultation with current Public Health Restrictions.  As new information is released and further best practices for facilitating skating are developed, we will continue to provide updates. Due to the fluidity of COVID-19, Skate Canada NL has created this website page as a primary resource for our members and registrants.
