
Joey Russell from the Polaris Skating Club in Labrador City was recently inducted into the Skate NL Hall of Fame. Joey, one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most accomplished skaters, is the Skate Canada 2011 National Senior Men’s Bronze Medallist and the Skate Canada 2006 National Junior Men’s Champion. As a member of Skate Canada’s Senior and Junior National Teams, Joey represented Canada at the 2011 ISU World Championships, the World Junior Championships, the 4 Continents Cup, and on the ISU Junior and Senior Grand Prix Circuits.
A longtime member of Skate NL’s Provincial Team, Joey earned multiple provincial and sectional titles. He represented the province at the 2004 Canada Winter Games, where he won a bronze medal. Additionally, he was named Newfoundland and Labrador’s Junior Male Athlete of the Year in 2004, 2005, and 2006.
Joey made history as a quadruple gold medalist in the Skate Canada STARSkate test and assessment program, becoming the first Canadian skater to complete all levels of the Skate Canada Skating Skills tests. He achieved this remarkable milestone at the Polaris Skating Club in Labrador City, where he also earned his Gold Free Skate, Ice Dance, and Artistic Skating Tests.
Today, Joey remains actively involved in the skating community as a coach and choreographer.
