The Thistle Shield is presented to the club with the most points at the Skate Newfoundland and Labrador Junior Provincial Championships. Prince of Wales Skating Club presented thistrophy to Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador in 2003. The club decided to donate the trophy in honour of the many years of dedicated volunteer work put in by Agnes Thistle, a club member, former club executive member, and high-level judge. Agnes Thistle has received many awards, including Provincial Judge of the year (twice), Canadian Judge of the year, and the Skate Canada Volunteer Award of Excellence. She was made an honourary member of Skate Canada Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, and an inaugural member of the Hall of Fame in 2010.

In the spring of 2006 the Pack Family and the skating community lost a dear child and skater, Rebecca Pack. To celebrate Rebecca’s love of life and skating, the Pack Family have established in her memory “The Rebecca Pack Memorial Award”. This commemorative award in honour of Rebecca will be presented annually at the Rebecca Pack Memorial Friendship Skate competition. The criteria set out by the Pack Family states that the award be presented to the competitor, who in the opinion of the Competition Judges, demonstrates tenacity, a love of skating, and good sportsmanship, all of the endearing qualities we will remember when we think of Rebecca.

• Presented to a skater competing in the Agnes Thistle Invitational who demonstrated good sportsmanship, spirit of fair play, cooperation, friendship and who puts his/her heart and soul into his/her training
• This award is to represent the true meaning of skating – a skater who embraces the joy of skating
• Does not need to be a medal winner as this award is open to all skaters entered in this event
• Selection is to be by coaches involved with the event and when possible by Agnes Thistle
• Each coach along with Agnes Thistle can present their vote in a ballot box at registration prior to the final medal presentation
• The votes will be tabulated by a panel of three determined by the Host Committee in consultation with the SCNL Competitions Chairperson. The panel can be comprised of: members of the host committee, an official, and/or SCNL Board Members
• In the event of no clear winner, a draw will be conducted of those tied in first place
• Whenever possible, this award should be presented by Agnes Thistle or a member of the Thistle family. If none present, a member of the host committee shall present.

The Balisch Cup was donated by Alexander Balisch. Mr Balisch came to Newfoundland from Austria in 1967 to act as a professional coach with Prince of Wales FSC, and St. John’s FSC. He later retired from coaching but remained much involved with skating at club (President of Prince of Wales) and section level.

This award is sponsored by the Withers Family in the honor of the memory of Ted Withers Mr. Withers was a former Chairperson of the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association and instrumental in starting the young judges training program. He was also President of the St. John¹s Figure Skating Club, Chairman of the Newfoundland & Labrador Sport Federation, an inducted member in the Newfoundland Sport Hall of Fame. and a great spokesperson for skating in this province and would not settle for second best in anything. His motto was – “No matter where you place or what you do, just enjoy your skate and give it all you got.” It was easy to hear him shout “SELL” – meaning ‘go for it’. The award is presented annually to any skater performing in the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Figure Skating Championships who has presented the MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE at the competition. The performance should demonstrate spirit, courage, confidence and energy, throughout which the skater gives 100% and sets an example for other skaters.

2007 is the first year for this award in Eastern Region. It is in memory of Pat Laskey, a long time member of the Flying Blades Club of Clarenville. Pat was a long- time volunteer and friend to all levels of skaters in Eastern Region and in the Newfoundland Section. She was awarded the Skate Canada Volunteer Award of Excellence in 1998. Pat lost her battle with cancer Aug.1, 2002. Eastern Region proudly honours her memory with this award, made to the club earning most points at Eastern Interclub. The first recipient of the award was the Flying Blades Club. Gail Hopkins, Eastern Region Chairperson, Past President of the Flying Blades and long time friend of Pat Laskey was proud to accept the award on the club’s behalf.
